Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are available in different strengths to address shallow as well as deeper acne scars. Peels effectively remove the top layer of skin and minimize scars. They also can lighten or eliminate dark spots caused by acne.

Most patients have multiple treatments to reduce and eliminate acne scars and achieve outstanding results.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion can be used to treat severe acne scarring. It removes the top layer of skin. In most cases, dermabrasion completely eliminates surface scars. It can reduce the appearance of deep acne scars. Most patients need multiple treatments to achieve best results from dermabrasion.

Dermabrasion is not recommended for all skin types because it can cause pigment changes, particularly in people with darker skin.

Microdermabrasion

A relatively new acne scar treatment, microdermabrasion uses tiny crystals to gently polish the surface of the skin. After the procedure, your dermatologist will vacuum the surface of your skin to remove loosened skin cells and the crystals. Results for microdermabrasion are subtle compared with other acne scar treatments. For this reason, it is most often recommended for patients who only have surface scarring and skin discolorations from acne.

Multiple treatments often are needed to create a glowing, refreshed look.

Dermal (Facial) Fillers

Dermal fillers can be injected under the skin and into scars. This process fills acne pits and smoothes ridges in acne scars. Results are outstanding and can last up to a year in some cases. Additional injections are needed to maintain results.

Intense Light Therapy: Laser, Pulsed-light, and Radiofrequency

Used to remove the outer layer of skin, intense light therapy can include lasers, pulsed lights, and radiofrequency resurfacing techniques to heat the skin. Eventually, the skin sloughs off, revealing fresh, new skin in its place. The technique is ideal for improving the texture and appearance of your skin.

The type of laser treatment you receive will depend on your skin type and the depth of your acne scars. These acne scar removal techniques can cause minor discomfort; however, recovery time is minimal (3 to 5 days).

Most people need multiple treatments to achieve their goals.

Skin Surgery

Minor surgery (or punch excision) can be used to eliminate individual acne scars. Often stitches are enough to close the gap left from the scar removal. In some cases, your dermatologist can use a skin graft to repair the hole where the scar was removed.
